The First Steps
October 2, 2008 by songmirae
With fear and uncertainty I am forced to take the first steps. It’s a big step since I am not a tech buff and have had very little practice except when necessary. That is the key…only when necessary does one take the step to acquaint oneself with the mysterious world of CALL. I have read so many different literature and yet, the click or a sense of familiarity does not appear.
So…it seems that the only to get there is to sink or swim. I feel that I will sink slowly right now.
The readings make blogging seem so simple. But when I finally have an account which was not a bad experience, I find myself looking at the blank weblog that is supposed to be mine. Yes, a picture or two may help, but I still haven’t the confidence to feel that necessary pull to be creative. I don’t know if there is a mental block but I feel comfortable with just writing.
When we take the first steps, we need a hand or someone to turn to who is right there to show us what we are doing is ok or not. I believe this is called ’scaffolding’. I feel empty because it is not there. My husband or children are available but again, I feel impatience projecting from them; it’s like why are you making such a big deal. Then I withdraw into my shell, like the turtle. A class on the subject matter should help me thru this shell-shock stage.
I guess I am just old-fashioned. The new tools are not really that scarry, it’s just that they have their own language. Must this new language always be learned thru trial and error? What if the personality does not fit such a method?
I have signed up for bloglines…the aggregator. In theory, it is comprehensible. But, in practice, I still haven’t added a feed yet. Will try to play around – maybe I forgot how to play with toys. Some of the fault is in the pressure for time; there seems no way to block life out and just play. A pity.

Hi thanks for letting me know that my post about the differences between pages and posts helped you. I think these tools are definitely scary if you are starting out and don’t have a guiding hand to help you on your way.
When I started blogging I decided to blog about what I learned during my journey with the attitude that if I don’t know it then others won’t also.
I personally prefer to use Google Reader rather than Bloglines because it has a lot of extra features plus Google has so many cool applications that are useful. Here is my post about RSS and Google Reader that may help you and it is really easy to add a feed to Google Reader. If you want me to recommend some blogs worth reading let me know
.
Oops forgot to mention don’t forget to check out the Getting Started with Edublogs page as there are several How-To manuals that will help you with blogging.
Sue,
Appreciated your comments.
